Dear Sir / Madam

Re: Application for a Science Teacher position

I am writing in response to your advertisement dated 3 September 2009 in www.jobscentral.com.sg for the position of a Science Teacher. I am very interested in filling the position as I can meet the requirements and spectrum of the job based on my university education and my past experience in relief teaching and tutoring.

I will graduate in July 2010 and will be awarded a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Chemistry by the National University of Singapore (NUS). While at NUS, I also read courses offered by the departments of Mathematics and Pharmacy to broaden my knowledge on Science.

You asked for a Science graduate who is approachable and able to interact with children and teenagers effectively and comfortably, and I am one. My relief teaching experience in junior college has enabled me to develop strong interpersonal and communication skills through interaction with my students and colleagues. You also mentioned that a positive attitude is necessary. I believe that I possess this positive attitude which explains why I was asked to do relief teaching again by the same school.

You also stated that the candidate you are looking for must be proficient with secondary science syllabus which I am familiar with since I was giving tuition to both secondary school and junior college students. Hence, I am not only confident of teaching secondary school Chemistry but I am also capable of facilitating the transition from secondary school to junior college Chemistry. In addition, I have performed many hands-on experiments independently and performed analysis after the laboratory sessions. Hence, I am also capable to teaching the students the theory behind laboratory work. In addition, I am also a dedicated worker who is willing to commit to work on weekends.

I am conscientious and self motivated worker with an enthusiasm to motivate and create the passion in science in the children and teenagers which is a valuable trait that is desired in a Science teacher. I would like to put my experience, academic achievements and communication skills to work in a tuition centre like yours.

I would welcome an opportunity to discuss with you some strategies I have planned out to stretch student’s potential in science to the maximum. I can be reached at the phone number and email address indicated in the enclosed resume. I look forward to receiving your favorable reply.

Thank you very much for your kind attention.

Yours Sincerely,

Chan Xin Wei (Miss)

  • Hi Xin Wei,

I like your application letter's structure which was clear and well-paragraphed.

I also like the way you mentioned that you tutor both secondary and Junior college students, and can even facilitate the transition from secondary school to Junior colllege. This will definitely boost your chances of being considered as a strong candidate for the position, as you have exceeded their requirements.

You also mentioned that you are a "conscientious and self motivated worker". Perhaps it may be better if you gave examples or situations where you had displayed such qualities? That might give your application a more personal touch and strengthen the credibility of your statement.

    Cheers,
    Zhengyang.

  • Dear Xin Wei,

I think the way you structure your content is very clear and each paragraph demonstrates the point you want to make clearly.

I agree with Zhengyang that your point on being able to facilitate the transition from secondary school to junior college is an added advantage. It is good that you can prepare your students for their study of chemistry in junior college. This will be able to attract students who intend to further their chemistry study to enrol in the education centre.

In the third paragraph you mentioned that you possess a positive attitude, maybe you would like to iilustrate your point further with the instances in which this quality was displayed.

  • Hi Xin Wei,

Looking at the application letter on the whole, i must say that it looks COMPLETE! You also mentioned "Encl: Resume" which i thought was a great move to direct the letter reader that there's something else attached to your application letter.

You made the effort to prove to your employer that you have met their requirement (based on the ads) plus you brought out your strength and positive traits which i believe would impress the employer.

Overall, job well done! If i were the employer, i'm sure to put you in my interview list! :D

    Cheers,
    Ariff

  • Hi all,

It is indeed heartening to hear some positive comments from you guys.

I am glad that it is clear, complete and well paragraphed to you all. I am glad that the point on ability to facilitate transition between secondary level and junior college level came across as a strong point to boost my chances of being put through the interview.

However, I have to admit that some of my points where I state that I possess "positive attitude" and "conscientious and self motivated worker" were not well illustrated.

Nevertheless, I have tried to work on these aspects in my submitted personal statement. In addition, I have tried to give more personal touch to my personal statement, using my work experiences to back me up.

    Regards,
    Xin Wei
