The importance of effective communication skills

Effective communication skills are important because of the positive impact it has on the interpersonal relationship and character development of a person.

Communication is part and parcel of our daily life as we get to meet people from all walks of life. However, should communication breakdown, this could lead to misunderstandings. If no appropriate actions had been taken to clear up these misunderstandings, interpersonal relationship would be jeopardised. Since these unnecessary misunderstandings are rooted from poor communication skills, the importance of effective communication skills becomes more apparent.

In addition, how well a person can communicate is likely to influence his character development. People who are able to communicate effectively are usually more confident and are able to interact with others at ease. As such, they are usually able to create a good and deep impression on the others and are also capable of fostering stronger ties as compared to those who are unable to communicate effectively. It is important to have good interpersonal relationship so as to ensure a harmonious work environment and to enhance work efficiency. Furthermore, without effective communication skills, great ideas cannot be brought across and shared with others.

All in all, I hope that I have shed some light on this issue regarding the importance of effective communication skills and I believe that everyone should put in more practice and make a conscientious effort to master this skill.

  • Hi Xin Wei,

I like your paragraph on how communication can influence a person's character development and I think you have illustrated the point in a clear manner such that I am able to follow your line of thought. I agree with you on this issue. For me, since I am not able to communicate effectively, I get quite worried when I need to speak to people whom I am not familiar with. As a result, I have become a rather reserved person and my social circle is restricted. Perhaps you could share your experience too? :)

  • Hi Xin Wei,

I agree with you that confidence does affect the way a person communicates. During my NS, I was serving as a staff officer and I do believe that many of my communication skills were put to the test. I realized that I have become more confident when speaking to others, especially after my time in NS.

I like your point on character development. I never thought of that.

Great post, unique points of view seen here.

  • Hi all,

Firstly, allow me to thank all of you for taking time out to read my blog and providing me with your feedback. I hope you have enjoyed reading my post.

Perhaps I did not shed some light on the issue pertaining to the importance of effective communication skills as I did not manage to include my personal experience to illustrate my point. In this aspect, I might not have given enough personal touch to this blog post. Nevertheless, I am glad that Alahappan and Chai Yee have pointed this out to me.

Thank you Wang Ting for your compliments on developing unique points. I will continue to work on it.

    Regards,
    Xin Wei
